2018 Speakers

A distinct and essential feature of STC is that we draw all of our guest speakers from the many highly successful Sport, Health and Exercise Science Alumni working in the field.

By inviting former students to address and inspire our current cohort, STC makes a direct link between the skills and confident communication developed through our degree programmes, and the achievement of desired careers.

For STC2018 we are very proud to welcome a special guest:

Keynote – Rob Vickerman

Ex-International rugby player and Founder of Workathlete

Rob Vickerman is one of England Rugby Sevens’ most successful captains. Leading England to victory in the World Series Events in 2008, 2011 and 2013, as well as reaching the Sevens World Cup Final. His career spanned over a decade until a neck injury forced retirement in 2015, aged just 29. Rob is now a studio pundit on BT Sport as well as a pitchside reporter for Sky Sports. He also commentates on Aviva Premiership and Championship matches and is a brand ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust, where he mentors youngsters in sport. View Rob’s full bio.

Opening address – Rebecca Leigh

Graduate Sports Assistant, St Peter’s School, York

Rebecca graduated from the University of Hull in 2014 with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science. Throughout her time at university, she was able to successfully balance her studies alongside playing netball in BUCS and being an active member of the Hull University Netball Squad committee. In her final year she was keen to explore the clinical side of her degree further and wrote a Systematic Review on the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training in cardiology patients. Opening address – Jacob Mitchell

Senior Rehabilitation Therapist, Ealing Trailfinders RFC

Jacob graduated from the University of Hull in 2014 with a BSc (Hons) in Sport Rehabilitation. During his time at the University, and since graduating, Jacob has gained experience working with a wide variety of professional sports teams. Alongside his full-time role in sport, he also runs an injury clinic for the public and is currently working towards becoming an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Alumni speaker – Chris Thompson

Sport Scientist, Saarland University / University of Technology Sydney

Chris graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science in 2013. During his time in SHES he gained valuable experience working as a strength and conditioning coach with several recreational sports clubs across Hull, as well as a placement period with Coventry City FC Academy in his final year.
